In American history, women have not always had the same rights and opportunities of men. Yet, there were exceptions throughout history of women casting aside the general role of just a mother or housewife. Two fictitious examples occur in the book The Awakening by Kate Chopin, and the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare. In The Awakening, Edna, the protagonist of the story, undergoes a realization that her nineteenth-century lifestyle is not the way she wants to live. She rebels against being treated like a piece of property and tries to break free of societies laws. Macbeth tells the story of a man named Macbeth and his wife Lady Macbeth who desires to become queen. Lady Macbeth is the one who told him to kill the current king Duncan to become king himself. Both Edna and Lady Macbeth portray examples of women with autonomy, but the one who displays the characteristics of autonomy the best is Edna. Edna is more autonomous than Lady Macbeth, who only influences rather than displ ay her own independence, because she takes a stand against society, which is the ultimate act of independence. Lady Macbeth is inarguably a very strong, powerful woman with a lot of control, especially at the beginning of the play. This quote explains the extent of her control over her husband, â€Å"Lady Macbeth appears to be somehow in league with evil and Macbeth its victim, a fly in the spider’s web who struggles mightily but cannot escape† (Johnson). She manipulates her husband to get him to do what she wants. When she learns of his destiny to become king, she can’t just let him sit around waiting on it to happen; she knows he has to act. She tells Macbeth he has to kill king Duncan and overrides his objections. Lady Macbeth tries to commit the mu... ...to live, has more autonomy than Lady Macbeth who could only persuade. Both of these women are extremely strong and independent, which makes it very difficult to decide between them. In the end though, Edna is the more autonomous because she held her beliefs until the very end. Lady Macbeth let her ideas get the better of her and felt the guilt of these ideas. Global warming and climatic changes have a synergistic relationship-one leads to the other. Climatic changes are substantial alterations in the earth’s climate that lasts for an extended period of time and can be as a result of global warming. Global warming is defined as a change of climate that causes an increase in the average temperature of the lower atmosphere. This is attributed to human interferences especially the release of excessive amounts of green house gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, water vapor and other fluorinated gases. Global warming is on the rise but in the last century the rate of increase has been alarming. This has prompted world leaders to seek ways of thwarting the rise. It has been revealed that the average temperature of the atmosphere has risen by between 0. 74-0. 18oC. , in a span of one century . This paper tries to identify the solutions to global warming as well as highlighting the positions taken by opponents of the identified solutions. The impacts of global warming on the youths in future as well as the effects of hydrogen and fuel cell on warming are also discussed. Solutions to Global Warming Researches indicate that there is no immediate solution to global warming but there are a number of measures which if followed will retard the development and even reduce the rate of global warming. Some of the measures include; investing a lot in renewable energy, and reduction of the amount of heat trapping gases such as carbondioxide, methane, and ozone emitted to the environment. Much of these gases are from the burning of fossil fuels leading to the emission of carbon dioxide, nevertheless, investing in renewable source of energy, energy efficiency and increasing the efficiency of the vehicles we drive can serve as a great step towards the reduction of overdependence on oil and other fossils fuels that are the source of greenhouse gases and thus global warming. Efficient use of the available energy coupled with the shift to renewable forms of energy such as wind, solar geothermal and bio-energy may significantly reduce the release of heat trapping gases. Nations should plant palm plants and corn plants which are later processed to release alcohol (ethernol) which when burnt releases only energy and water which do not contribute to global warming. The developed countries as well as the newly industrialized economies are the major contributors of green house gases , the U. S in particular produces 70% of all its electricity from fossil fuel such as coal natural gas oil and only 2% of renewable source. The usage of electricity from renewable source offers the most effective way towards the reduction of global warming. De-privatizing (socializing) the US power companies will also serve as an essential step towards solving global warming. This is because de-privatization will allow faster transition from the use of fossil fuel to renewable forms of energy without much consideration to private profits however this calls for serious round table discussions between governments and power companies to reach a consensus. The public also play active role in the fight to contain global warming. The public more than the companies form the larger proportion of the global inhabitants and unless they are involved in the quest for its solution, all will be in vain. They should be educated in regard to green house gases. Leaders worldwide should also be informed of their role in the fight against global warming and should represent their governments effectively on the transition to renewable energy (John J Berger pp. 97). The public should be conversant with the effective use of renewable energy such as solar and wind energy and bio-ethernol. United States and other industrialized nations should be pressurized into the adoption of international treaties to reduce green house gas emission this is because they are a major contributor of carbon dioxide and other heat trapping gases in the environment. It should be noted that the newly industrialized economies and other developing countries are keeping close watch on the developments taken by the U. S and if they are not in harmony with the international treaties, these countries will also violate the rules and thus blowing out of proportion the effects of global warming. Demerits of the proposed solutions to global warming Despite the aforementioned solutions to global warming, different individuals and groups are very skeptical because they feel that solutions are far from being practical. They argue that the conversion to renewable energy will face a lot of challenges since it negates the previous policies that aimed at helping infant industries in developing countries. In addition, they feel that the shift to renewable energy will hinder the development of other nations thus increasing inequality within nations as has been the case in the last two decades. This they argue will aggravate the social and political tensions. The diversion of the worlds leading grain crop to the production of fuel may affect food prices everywhere. In the event world corn prices rise, so will those of wheat and rice both because of consumer substitution. The crops will also compete for land. This will ultimately hinder the fight against food insecurity and hunger which are perennial problems affecting most of the developing countries. The conversion of agricultural land and forests into farms growing crops suitable for bio-ethernol and other natural sources of renewable energy will have far reaching repercussions. Key among them is the risk of environmental pollution and accumulation of carbon dioxide which will otherwise worsen the situation instead of improving the global climate. When the European Union decided to promote bio-fuel to counter global warming and rain forests were destroyed and replaced with palm trees that make palm oil for fuel. Essay on the Meaning of the Gettysburg Address While the Gettysburg Address is fairly short in length at around 300 words, this famous speech delivered by President Abraham Lincoln on November 19, 1963 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania is both enduring and meaningful for all Americans today, almost exactly 146 years later. The first paragraph of his speech sets the tone, in which Lincoln does not directly mention the bloody Battle of Gettysburg, in which 50,000 soldiers lost their lives. Instead, he refers in the opening phrase, â€Å"Four score and seven years ago,† to the founding of America through another important written document, the Declaration of Independence in 1776. I believe Lincoln wanted the country to focus on preserving this†¦show more content†¦I believe he is again focusing on preserving the country and uniting all Americans, North and South, behind the nation and reminding them of our common history. Unemployment Benefits a Federal/State Lifeline

Unemployment compensation is not a government benefit you want to have to accept. But the United States officially entered its worst economic recession since the Great Depression in December 2007, and an additional 5.1 million Americans had lost their jobs by March 2009. More than 13 million workers were unemployed. The national unemployment rate stood at 8.5 percent and rising. By the end of March 2009, an average of 656,750 Americans a week were turning in their first-ever applications for unemployment compensation. Things have improved considerably since then. The U.S. unemployment rate dropped to 4.4 percent by April 2017. This marked the lowest rate experienced since May 2007. But this still leaves 7.1 million workers out of jobs, and they need assistance.   Where does the money to pay unemployment  benefits come from? Heres how it works.   Defense Against Economic Despair The federal/state unemployment compensation (UC) program was created as part of the Social Security Act of 1935 in response to the Great Depression. Millions of people who had lost their jobs were unable to buy goods and services, which just led to even more layoffs. Today, unemployment compensation represents the first and perhaps last line of defense against that ripple effect of joblessness. The program is designed to provide eligible, unemployed workers with a weekly income sufficient to allow them to afford the necessities of life, such as food, shelter, and clothing, while they look for new jobs. Costs are Truly Shared by Federal and State Government UC is based on federal law, but its administered by the states. The UC program is unique among U.S. social insurance programs in that its funded almost totally by either federal or state taxes paid by employers. Currently, employers pay federal unemployment taxes of 6  percent on the first $7,000 earned by each of their employees during a calendar year. These federal taxes are used to cover the costs of administering UC programs in all states. The federal UC taxes additionally pay one-half of the cost of extended unemployment benefits during periods of high unemployment and provide for a fund from which states may borrow, if necessary, to pay benefits. State UC tax rates vary from state to state. They may be used only to pay benefits to unemployed workers. The state UC tax rate paid by employers is based on the states current unemployment rate. As their unemployment rates go up, the states are required by federal law to raise the UC tax rate paid by employers. Almost all wage and salaried workers are now covered by the federal/state UC program. Railroad workers are covered by a separate federal program. Ex-service members with recent service in the Armed Forces and civilian federal employees are covered by a federal program, with  states paying benefits from federal funds as agents of the federal government. How Long Do UC Benefits Last? Most states pay UC benefits to eligible unemployed workers for up to 26 weeks. Extended benefits may be paid for as long as 73 weeks in periods of very high and rising unemployment nationwide or in individual states,  depending on state law. The cost of extended benefits is paid equally from state and federal funds. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, a 2009 economic stimulus bill, provided for an extra 33 weeks of extended UC payments to workers whose benefits were scheduled to expire at the end of March of that year. The bill also increased the UC benefits paid to some 20 million jobless workers by $25 per week. Under the Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2009 signed into law by President Obama on Nov. 6, 2009, unemployment compensation benefit payments were extended for an additional 14 weeks in all states. Jobless workers were for an additional six weeks of benefits in states where the unemployment rate was at or above 8.5 percent.   As of 2017, maximum unemployment insurance benefits range from $235 a week in Mississippi to $742 a week in Massachusetts plus $25 per child dependent as of 2017. Unemployed workers in most states are covered for a maximum of 26 weeks, but the limit is only 12 weeks in Florida and 16 weeks in Kansas.   Who Runs the UC Program? The overall UC program is administered at the federal level by the U.S. Department of Labors Employment and Training Administration. Each state maintains its own state unemployment insurance agency. How Do You Get Unemployment Benefits? Eligibility for UC benefits as well as methods for applying for benefits are set by the laws of the various states, but only workers determined to have lost their jobs through no fault of their own are eligible to receive benefits in any state. In other words, if youre fired or quit voluntarily, you probably will not be eligible.
